Introduction Sometimes when logging in to my Artix installation I’d get an array of dconf errors from multiple programs. i3’s status bar would not show up, certain programs like Codium would not launch, and the system would just behave in peculiar ways. dconf-CRITICAL **: 07:54:25.230: unable to create directory '/run/user/1000/dconf': Permission denied. dconf will not work properly. Checking logind would show that it was running, and loginctl list-sessions would list the session, but the /run/user directory would be completely empty. Any attempt to manually create the hierarchy would cause the new folders to get immediately and completely nuked. Restarting and enabling logind did not seem to have any effect. ...

Introduction After installing Artix with LXQT and runit on my NovaCustom laptop I was finding that many GUI applications were failing to run properly. When running them via terminal to see the error output there were all sorts of dconf related errors. These were related to issues in the /run/user/ hierarchy, such as the 1000 directory not being created. Intro Artix’s installer runs fine on my mid 2010s Macbook Air, but on my early 2020s NovaCustom the Calamares installer was hanging at ‘Gathering System Requirements’ as soon as it opened. Rather than use the CLI installer for doing all the disk encryption and other setup, I chose to resolve these issues so that the environment is as identical as possible to my other laptop.
